What are law firms looking for? In my 7 years in the legal sector, I’ve worked with some incredible paralegals, apprentices and trainees. This post lists some of the qualities they’ve possessed that I really admire, that I’ve personally had good feedback on when carrying out my own work, and that I feel are essential to impress!
It’s well worth bearing these in mind and working these attributes into your applications and interviews. If you’re already in a legal role, hopefully you’re on your way to nailing these!
You’re enthusiastic
I’ve said it before, but I really do think that the juniors who stand out are positive and have a great attitude.
Make it known you’re keen to be involved. Ask ALL the questions when you’re being briefed. Listen actively and take lots of notes. Be eager for feedback, and request this regularly.
Plus: a smile goes a long way!
You’re proactive
Great juniors go above and beyond in carrying out each task.
If a set of documents come in from the other side, volunteer to review them and provide comments. When you’re briefed on a new matter, ask which documents you can take a first stab at. If you’re assigned a research task, don’t just state the law you’ve found, apply it too.
Supervisors are generally happy to let you run with as much as you want to!
You’re reliable
Make it one of your goals to be seen as a ‘safe pair of hands’.
A good junior is dependable. Try to always work efficiently and to your deadline.
Be as responsive as possible too – even just a holding email to let someone know you’ll get to it (“Thanks X, I’m just finishing a task but will look at this shortly!”) works wonders.
You’re resilient
It takes time to master the basics, never mind more complex issues. And throughout your legal career you’ll continue to make mistakes – this is completely normal!
Sometimes your work will come back covered in red pen. Even once you think you’ve nailed something, everyone has their own drafting style.
Just take it in your stride, and remember that person’s preferences for next time!
You’re personable
Get to know the team and let your personality shine through. Remember: human first, lawyer second!
Partners are always going to be keen to ensure the answer to: “Can I put this person in front of a client?” is a big fat yes.
People generally also respect juniors that are humble and get the job done with minimal fuss.
You’re visible
Now more than ever, as we’re working from home, prioritising your visibility in the team is key!
Try to make yourself well known to as many in the team as possible.
Have your camera on in calls so your teammates get to know your lovely face. Reach out to any team members you might not have had chance to chat to for virtual coffees. Get stuck in to team activities, even if it *is* your zillionth lockdown quiz!
